I am so pleased to announce that the book that Cynthia Colburn, Ella Gonzalez, and I have been co-editing and working for about 5 years won a CAA Millard Meiss Publication Fund Grant (Spring 2023). We are so excited to share the volume with the world and hope that educators, curators, students, and the general public find it useful in talking about gender violence in art — and how to mitigate damage, harm, and trauma in doing so.

The volume is set to publish in September of 2024 with Pennsylvania State University Press (PSUP).

By: Ellen C. Caldwell

This is the second time I have been an artist in residence at Yayasan Bali Purnati. Because many artists and writers have asked me about my experience here, I wanted to share some photos and information about this inspiring oasis.

Bali Purnati is located in Batuan, in the Gianyar region of Bali, about 20 minutes outside of Ubud. The property is expansive, beautiful, inspiring, and lush. There are four lumbungs to stay in, each with a second and third floor that can house up to two people per room. Rooms are spacious with private bathrooms. From the second I arrived here on my first stay, I felt completely at home.

The top floors feature high lofted ceilings and showers in the bathrooms, while the middle floors feature outside terraces and bathtubs in the bathroom. Rooms are complete with air conditioning and luxurious beds with mosquito nets too.

As a resident, you pay a nominal daily fee for room and board, which includes three meals a day. Residents enjoy their meals outdoors in the ground floor of the lumbung, an open-air patio space where you can also work and relax. You can make your own schedule and work with Purnati staff to set up a working space on the property, as desired. There is a wonderful pavilion with an open-air second floor, a work space by a river and waterfall, and other inspiring nooks located all over.

Simply put, Bali Purnati is inspiring and it cultivates creativity. Bali itself is a wonderful destination, and at Purnati, the residency cannot get much better, with a beautiful property, private rooms, delicious food, and and the friendliest and most helpful staff. I cannot say enough things about how great it is. I have been here twice in the past three years, working on two very different projects, and both stays were so productive. Both times I have left, I look forward to returning.

Having just finished teaching a seminar inspired by #TheFergusonSyllabus movement and momentum, I am thankful to Darnell L. Moore for pulling together these powerful readings, focusing on activists and scholars reacting to Mike Brown’s death in Ferguson last summer. Moore’s A Ferguson Syllabus: Reading a Movement is filled with wonderfully rich resources.

In his own words:

Names like #MikeBrown, #RekiaBoyd and #EricGarner and movement themes like #HandsUpDontShoot, #SayHerName and #ICantBreathe signify the same idea: Black lives matter and are worth fighting for, regardless of the reason black people end up opposite a police officer’s gun…

Here are some essential readings from several astute activists, journalists and writers that have inspired, angered and challenged readers everywhere this past year. While this is in no way an exhaustive list, the following offers insider and outsider views of Ferguson, pushing all of us to consider the radical spirit and collective beauty illuminated in mass mobilized protests.

It’s not often that I get to interview an old friend, whose artwork I love and spirit I admire. But Craft & Culture’s Ledger Magazine recently gave me the opportunity to do so with my junior high friend, fellow art lover, and former running buddy Ela Boyd.

You can buy hard copies here, and read the excerpt below…

Rad Gal: Ela Boyd
Ledger Magazine, Issue III

Simply put, Los Angeles-born and London-based artist Ela Boyd is a bad ass. Her light and video-installations combine technology, social media, projection, and performance to create an artistic happening for viewers to see, feel, and experience. She’s an artistic star on the rise and her “Expanded Cities” collaboration with photographer Aaron Farley recently opened in three cities across North America. I was lucky enough to sit down with her to catch up on her art in this digital age.

Ellen Caldwell: Can you tell me a little bit about your recent show “Expanded Cities”?

Ela Boyd: “Expanded Cities” is an exhibition that doesn’t exist in one place—it’s in three cities simultaneously. Each gallery has two screens and two web cameras and each has a color field. When you walk in, you interrupt the projection and become a silhouette on the screen. That gets recorded and gets projected in another city – and so on. So it becomes a loop and makes you wonder which silhouette is actually in your space and which is beaming in from somewhere else.

EC: That must be a wonderfully confusing and exciting experience as a viewer. What inspired this exhibit?

EB: I’ve been working on this idea of multiplicity and how we can be in several places simultaneously—both through media and consciousness. Through obvious ways like our Facebook profile and social media, but then also in the more abstract conceptual way of existing in the form of being, as an image of consciousness in someone else’s mind…

Ela Boyd is a new media installation artist originally from Hollywood, CA currently living and working in East London. She is a recent graduate of the UCSD Visual Art MFA program and received her BFA from California College of Arts in San Francisco.“Expanded Cities” will culminate in a closing reception in London. Visit the exhibition’s website to learn more.
